Dad Jokes Are a Public Service and You’re Welcome

Every time I tell a dad joke, a teenager somewhere loses a year off their life. And honestly? Good. They’ve been taking years off mine since the day they figured out how to slam a door.
I want to take a moment to defend the most misunderstood art form in America: the dad joke. Not the clever joke. Not the edgy joke. The pure, uncut, groan-inducing pun delivered with a straight face in front of your kid’s friends. That’s not comedy, gentlemen. That’s a public service.
Why dad jokes matter
Your kids are going to spend their whole lives around people trying to impress them. Influencers, bosses, guys at the gym who walk like they’re carrying invisible watermelons. Everybody’s performing.
And then there’s Dad. Dad, standing in the kitchen in socks and sandals, saying, “I used to hate facial hair, but then it grew on me.” Dad isn’t trying to impress anybody. Dad is free. Dad is teaching a valuable lesson: you can be a complete dork and still be loved. That’s the most important thing a kid can learn, and I teach it daily, mostly at the dinner table.
The rules of a proper dad joke
- Never laugh first. The delivery is deadpan. You let the silence breathe. You let the horror wash over the room.
- Timing is everything. The best moment is when the kid has friends over. The second-best moment is in public. The third-best moment is every other moment.
- Commit fully. If they groan, you tell another one. Immediately. You never retreat. You do not apologize. Dad jokes are a hill, and you live on that hill now.
- Recycle shamelessly. The same joke gets funnier the 400th time. Not for them. For you.
A starter pack for new recruits
Here’s a few from my personal collection. Use them responsibly. Or irresponsibly. They work either way.
- “I’d tell you a joke about construction, but I’m still working on it.”
- “I only know 25 letters of the alphabet. I don’t know Y.”
- “Want to hear a joke about paper? Never mind, it’s tearable.”
- Kid says: “I’m hungry.” You say: “Hi Hungry, I’m Dad.” This is the foundational text. Every other dad joke descends from it like a family tree.
- “Why did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field.” Said while pointing out the car window at a field. Every. Single. Time.
Advanced techniques
Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to level up. Answer every “Can I ask you something?” with “You just did.” Respond to “Dad, I’m going to bed” with “Okay, don’t take the bed with you.” When the waiter asks how everything was, look him dead in the eye and say, “Terrible, I ate all of it.” Then tip well, because you’re a dad, not a monster.
My crowning achievement was the time my teenager brought a date to dinner, and I worked a fish pun into every sentence for an hour. It was a masterpiece. I was told I’d “ruined everything forever.” I’ve never been prouder. The kid married that person. Clearly, I did not ruin everything. Clearly, I’m a matchmaker.
The secret
Here’s the real truth, and I’ll only say it once, so lean in. Every eye roll is a memory being made. Twenty years from now, your kid will be standing in their own kitchen, wearing their own ugly socks, and they’ll say “Hi Hungry, I’m Mom” or “I’m Dad” to a small, disgusted child. And somewhere, you’ll feel it. A disturbance in the force. A dad joke passed down to the next generation.
That’s legacy, boys. That’s immortality. And it costs nothing but your dignity, which you gave up the first time you changed a diaper on the hood of a car anyway.
Shop the damn thing: Dad hats for professional embarrassers.
